Clinical Experience

The key to successfully creating any complex image-processing instrument is to have access to an extensive, high-quality image data set and ground truth to use for development and performance evaluations.

To date, over 550 patients have participated in STI's cervical clinical trials at domestic locations which include Ft. Gordon, GA, and Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC).

Each of the images provides more than 100,000 data points to support extraction of feature parameters, such as the “color” or “opacity” of acetowhite lesions in conditions ranging from normal to cancerous.

STI Medical Systems has also engaged in international clinical activities in low-resource settings including Lithuania and Peru. Due to the paucity of preventive cervical screening, frequent occurrence of human papilloma virus (HPV), and the prevalence of numerous high-risk behaviors, far more cases of the various stages of cervical dysplasia (including invasive cervical cancer) as well as various infections and inflammations were collected than would be found in a similar effort in the US.
